フォニックスクラスのご紹介
ジョインスターでは、お子さまが正確に読み、綴り、書くことができるようになることを目的とした、フォニックスクラスを新たに開講します。世界的に有名なオックスフォード大学のRead Write Inc.シリーズをベースに、オリジナル教材やEFL学習者をサポートするジェスチャーを組み合わせたクラスです。このコースは、3つのコースのうちの最初のコースで、子どもたちはRead Write Inc.のプログラムの「セット1」に沿って学習していきます。

Introducing our phonics class!
We at JoynStar are proud to offer a new phonics class which aims to have your children reading, spelling, and writing accurately. Our classes combine the world famous Read Write Inc. series produced by Oxford as a base, as well as my original materials and sign language signs to support EFL learners. This is the first course in a proposed series of three courses, and children will be following ‘Set 1’ of the Read Write Inc. programme.
なぜフォニックスが重要なのか？
子どもたちがフォニックスを学ぶことは、書かれた文字を音声に変換する方法を認識し、文字を読むことを可能にするために重要です。私たちのフォニックスクラスは、子どもたちが自信を持って読み書きができるように、書かれた言語の暗号を解読する分析力を身につけることに重点を置いています。
音韻をしっかり学んだ子どもたちは、そうでない子どもたちに比べて、より簡単に読みを習得することができるという研究結果があります。
Why is phonics important?
It is important for children to learn phonetic relationships so they can recognise how to convert written letters into spoken sounds, enabling them to read. Our phonics class focuses on giving children the analytical skills to break the code of written language, empowering them to be confident readers and writers.
Research indicates that children who have learned strong phonological awareness acquire reading with greater ease than those who haven’t.
Read Write Inc.とは？
私たちは、世界中の多くのイギリスの小学校やインターナショナルスクールで採用されているRead Write Inc.のシステムを採用しています。このシステムは、20年以上にわたる子どもの言語習得の研究によって裏付けられた体系的なアプローチです。
文字と単語を結びつけてフォニックスに取り組もうとする先生もいますが（例：Cは「cat」）、この方法では子どもたちは音ではなく文字の名前と単語を識別することを学んでしまい、読みの学習には役に立たないため、失敗することが多いのです。Read Write Inc.では、「スピード感のある音」を、印象的なイラストと巧みなニーモニックとともに子どもたちに教え、文字の識別と形成をサポートします。
スピーディーな音を学んだ後は、「Fred Talk」に移ります。フレッドは、Read Write Inc.シリーズに存在するチャーミングなカエルのキャラクターです。彼は「Fred Talk」によってのみ音声的に単語を綴ることができ、音を混ぜて意味のある単語にするために子供たちの助けを借ります。例えば
– c/ /a/ /t/ —> “cat”
– sh/ /o/ /p/ —> “shop”
– th/ /i/ /ng/ —> “thing”.
英語は複雑な言語で、「Fred Talk」では出せない不規則な単語がたくさんあります。例えば、「one」という単語は「o」で始まりますが、音韻的には「w/ /o/ /n/」という音で構成されています。Read Write Inc.は、一般的なフォニックスプログラムの限界を認め、これらの不規則な単語を「Red Words」として導入し、特別にデザインされた楽しいショートストーリーを通して、子どもたちが暗記するよう学びます。このような単語には定期的に触れることで言語理解を強化し、文脈を通してその意味を学びます。
What is Read Write Inc.?
We are proud to be using the Read Write Inc. system which is employed in many British primary schools and international schools around the world. It is systemic in its approach, supported by over twenty years of research in child language acquisition.
While some teachers try to tackle phonics by linking letters to words (e.g. C for “cat”), this method often fails because children learn to identify the name of the letter with a word, instead of the sound, which is useless for learning to read. Instead, Read Write Inc. teaches ‘speedy sounds’ to children, along with memorable illustrations and clever mnemonics to support the letter identification and formation.
After the ‘speedy sounds’ have been learned, we move on to ‘Fred Talk’. Fred is a charming Frog character present in the Read Write Inc. series. He can only spell words phonetically through ‘Fred Talk’ and relies on the children’s help to blend sounds into meaningful words. For example:
- /c/ /a/ /t/ —> “cat”
- /sh/ /o/ /p/ —> “shop”
- /th/ /i/ /ng/ —> “thing”
English is a complex language with many irregular words which cannot be produced with ‘Fred Talk’. For example, the word “one” begins with the letter “o” but is phonetically made up of the sounds /w/ /o/ /n/. Read Write Inc. acknowledges the limitations of typical phonics programmes and introduces these irregular words as ‘Red Words’ which children learn to memorise through specially designed fun short stories which reinforce their linguistic understanding through regular exposure to these words, while learning their meanings through contextualisation.

このクラスを受講する意味
EFLの教師としての経験から、たとえ何年も英語を学んできた子どもたちであっても、リーディングに苦労することがあり、それが英語学習に対する悪い姿勢を植え付けてしまうことがあると感じています。学習者は自分の読解力の低さに苛立ちを感じ、最終的には英語が嫌いになってしまうのです。そこで私は、現在英語を母国語とする人たちが学んでいるのと同じ方法で、子どもたちが読み書きを学べるように、このコースを作ることにしました。
このコースでは、Read Write Inc.のフォニックスプログラムに沿って、体系的かつ段階的にフォニックスを学びます。子どもたちは学びながらゆっくりと語彙とフォニックス能力を増やし、自信をつけていきます。Set 1の音をすべて覚えた後は、レベルに合わせて特別にデザインされたRed Dittyの本を読むことになります。子どもたちにとって、難しすぎる本は決してありません。
Read Write Incは英語を母国語とする子供たちのために開発されましたが、EFLの生徒の場合は、さらにサポートが必要な場合があります。また、単語のブレンドの仕方を学ぶだけでなく、単語の意味を視覚的に表現したオリジナルのフラッシュカードを使って、単語の意味を確認することもあります。さらに、記憶とリンクさせるために、学習中の単語をイギリス手話で表現する予定です。このように、視覚的・運動感覚的に学ぶ子どもたちをサポートし、子どもたちはさまざまな方法で学習することができます。
上達を確認するために、コース期間中4回のテストを行います。個々の音、その音素（筆記体）、「green」（音声）の単語とそれまでに学習した「red」（非音声）の単語のブレンドについてテストされます。また、個々の単語の暗記に頼らず、”alien”（作り物）の単語を音声学的に綴り、書くことで、フォニックスの知識を継続して活用できるようにします。
Set 1 “の音をすべて覚えた後は、”Red Ditty “の本を読みます。この本は、子どもたちが以前に習った音でできた単語だけが載っている特別な本です。また、ご家庭で保護者の方に読み聞かせをすることもお勧めします。また、音読では読めない「red」言葉（例：”you”, “my”, “he”）もこの本で学びます。
レッスンスケジュールと単語リストを保護者の方にお渡ししますので、ご家庭で練習していただくことができます。このコースの効果を最大限に引き出すために、ご家庭で定期的かつ頻繁に練習されることを強くお勧めします。
コースの最後には、子どもたちが新しく身につけたフォニックス能力を活かして、自分たちの短いコミックを書くミニプロジェクトがあります。JoynStarでは、学習は楽しい経験であるべきだと考えています。ですから、子どもたちには、自分のスキルをクリエイティブな方法で使うことを楽しんでもらいたいと思っています。コースの最後には、楽しい「スペリング・ビー」を行う予定です。このコースで学習した単語や新しい単語のスペルや書き方を、子どもたちは自分の知識を駆使して考えていきます。コース終了時には、子どもたち全員にお祝いの賞状が贈られます。
セット1を修了した生徒が受講できる、セット2のフォニックスクラスのプログラムも現在準備しております。
Why should your children take this course?
In my experience as an EFL teacher, I have noticed that even if children have learnt English for many years, they still struggle with reading and it can instill a bad attitude towards learning English. Learners feel frustrated at their low reading level, and ultimately come to dislike English. For this reason, I have decided to create this course so your children can learn to read and write in the same way that native English speakers are currently learning.
We will be following the Read Write Inc. phonics programme which teaches phonics in a systemic and gradual way. Children slowly build up their vocabulary and phonics ability while learning, and develop confidence in themselves. After learning all of the Set 1 sounds, they will move on to reading ‘Red Ditty’ books, which are specially designed to suit their level. Children will never read a book which is too difficult for them.
As Read Write Inc was initially developed for native English-speaking children, your children may need some additional support as EFL students. In addition to learning how to blend words, we will also be checking the meaning of these words using my original flash cards which show a visual representation of the word. To further build strong links with our memory, I will also be introducing British Sign Language signs of the words we are learning. This way, children who are visual and kinesthetic learners have lots of support and children can learn in a variety of ways.
To monitor and track progress, there will be four tests throughout the course. Children will be tested on individual sounds, their graphemes (written formation), blending ‘green’ (phonetic) words, and ‘red’ (non-phonetic) words that we have learned up to that point.. In order for children not to rely solely on memorising individual words, they will also have to phonetically spell and write ‘alien’ (made-up) words, to continue applying their phonics knowledge.
After learning all of the ‘Set 1’ sounds, we will move on to reading ‘Red Ditty’ books. These books are specially designed to only include words made up of sounds the children have previously learned. We will read each book at least twice, and children are encouraged to read to parents at home too. Through these books, children will also learn ‘red’ (non-phonetic) words which cannot be read by phonetically reading them (for example. “you”, “my”, he”).
I will be providing the lesson schedule, as well as the word lists to parents, so they can practice at home. It is highly recommended that children practice regularly and often at home to get the most benefit out of this course.
At the end of the course, we will have a mini project where children have the chance to apply their new-found phonics ability to write their own short comic! At JoynStar we believe learning should be a fun experience, so we would like the children to enjoy using their skills in a creative way. To end the course, we are going to be having a fun ‘spelling bee’. Children will use their knowledge to figure out how to spell and write words we have studied throughout the course, as well as some new ones. All children will be presented with a congratulatory certificate upon completion of the course.
We will be in contact about the possibility of the roll-out of the Set 2 phonics course in the future.
